SmartBro "USB Modem is Unavailable" Error Problem and Solution?

An officemate of mine bought a new SmartBro Broadban Internet plugit (a ZTE MF627) that doesn't work on her laptop, a Compaq Presario V3000. As the "resident evil" techie even with the IT Technical Support around, she asked for my help.

The SmartBro receives a 3G signal (HSDPA) but everytime I try to connect to the Internet, a pop up window with error message says: "USB Modem is unavailable"

At first I thought it's a conflict with the Sun Broadband also installed so I uninstalled the softare using the Programs in Control Panel, tried again but the error remained.

I then tried uninstalling the SmartBro also in Programs, then re-installed but again, to no avail, error remains.

Note that Device Manager reports no error, conflicts or driver problems.

For now I'm downloading the ZTE MF627 driver for Windows XP/2000 (there alre also available free ZTE MF627 driver downloads fro Linux, Macintosh (Mac), even Windows 7.

If the new driver fails, there must be something with the notebooks hardware or software installation that's incompatible with the ZTE USB modem or needed a patch/software upgrade.

Will continue to troubleshoot this problem as I can't find solutions online even on blogs and forums that even Smart customer support cant solve :(

  1. Where did you find the XP driver? Can you please post a link? Did installing the new driver solve the problem. It's ridiculous that this problem is documented on several blogs/messageboards (including SMART's own message board!) and there is no apparent solution!

    Thanks!

  2. anonymous, installing the USB modem driver from smart bro website didn't solve the problem. I guess it's a hardware issue more specifically to the USB port. As the laptop's not mine, i wasn't able to fix the problem and the owner, due to lack of time, merely used her other notebook where the new smartbro plugit works

    case unsolved!

  3. maybe the server in that area is unavailable at the time..it happens to me also but in a matter of minutes I can connect again...try to connect in other areas..or
if your using a MF627 ZTE go to network settings choose 3g only and choose 1 band of frequency whether 850mhz or 2200mhz...it depends whether one band has a greater signal..if that does not work maybe the hardware problem of the usb port or the dongle itself...

  7. guys, im from smart and im still looking for a solution to the problem. every post in any forum talked about device drivers, incompatibility of the modem to the OS, etc. But as per my initial analysis, this is caused by a component of an antivirus that holds zte proprietary modem driver to load while connecting the device to the internet. There are 3 antivirus programs I encountered this error, Eset NOD32, Norton Antivirus, Trend Micro.

The only solution I got for now is re-formatting the OS, and during re-installation of the antivirus, please add smartbro program to exception list.

  8. anonymous, if that's the real cause of the problem, you don't need to re-format, it's overkill. re-configure the antivirus is the way to do it. my officemate is using Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition. Contacting each anti-virus vendor to solve the problem is the long term solution or just switch to another mobile broadband provider: smartbro sucks!

  9. Switch to a different provider is the best solution. Since Day 1, I have trouble installing the device and no resolution found on Smart's website.

  11. Antivirus my ass. I'm using win7 ultimate 32bit. No antivirus. No firewall. Defender off since OS installation. Embedded firewall off too. I started getting that error last week. Cant connect until now. Used tattoo, worked fine. Used sun, ran fine. Issue is only with smart bro. Used both the old plugit and the new one. Used 2 diff sim cards. No effect. Good job smart.

  18. I already solved this problem. Just go to control panel>Add hardware and Windows should install it for you. If this fails then I don't know what's wrong. I use Windows XP so I don't know if it will work in other versions of Windows. You don't have to refoemat your OS. Hope this helps.
