A few days ago, I received an SMS message from Jodie that goes like this:

"Sir, it's me Jodie. Hirap na ko talaga.Payag na ako sa gusto mo kapalit ng nung hinihiram ko sa yo" (text speak converted here for easier reading)

warning, it's just another modus operandi from scammers for possible victims responding for probably sexual favors or sex solicitations but may end up being robbed. An officemate ofmine also received the same text message from 09279483926 but als odidn't reply to evenknow what the mysterious texter would ask for.

CDR King NAV-58F 3.5” GPS Navigator, Is it Worth the Price?

For months before I bought my Garmin Nuvi 1300, I was waiting to get my hands on the just released NAV-58F GPS Navigator of CDR King.

at first glance, the specifications and features on CDR King's website:

NAV-58F
3.5” GPS Navigator
Price: PhP 5,800.00
Warranty: 6 months (better than the usual 1 month)
Replacement: 1 week

Following discussions on the net, the GPS unit has no tracklogs, meaning it does not record tracks and therefore next to useless for mapping. It's like an entry level Garmin Nuvi.

No information yet if it supports Garmin's IMG file format to use either Roadguide or Open Street Map (OSM).

Is is recommended? If you know a friend from the states coming home, just buy any Garmin Nuvi online from Amazon or eBay and have it shipped via balikbayan boxes or hand-carried. I bought my Garmin Nuvi 1300 at just $149.00, P600 more than the cost of this unit so think twice :P

Margarito says he'll stop Pacquiao, Pacquiao didn't make a bold prediction, Freddie Roach first said it'll be over in round 9 and now boldly proclaims don't be surprised if the fight's over in round 1

Who do you expect to win the Pacquiao - Margarito fight? Winner of the Pacquiao - Margarito fight would be the last man standing or who the judges scored the most.

Tips How to Win Lotto Jackpot PCSO Lottery 6/42, 6/45, 6/55

For people who'd like to know if they're lucky and take a shot at the balooning jackpot of PCSO GrandLotto 6/55...including the greedy senators who "wants to help the poor" but don't palce bets when the grand prize is low

Sure ways tips to win the lottery:
1. Take care of your numbers. Having a set of numbers each time has a
higher probability of winning.

2. Computer programs calculating winning lotto number combination don't
work

3. Winning number patterns can't predict the next winning combinations.
The balls are each weighed before each draw, right? If you want
predictable and cheated results, just bet on jueteng, the illegal numbers game patronized by the poor who has no money for food and education yet finds resources for alcohol, cigarettes and sometimes drugs, even if they know jueteng lords cheat their own game :(

4. More bets mean more probability of winning; and the higher risk of
losing :P

5. The only way to win the lotto jackpot is to be the luckiest guy who
placed a bet. (There's some sort of luckiest guy on earth who won the lottery jackpot, not once but twice. Jose Rizal also was lucky when he co-won the second prize while in exile in Dapitan)

6. Most lotto winners come from the Bureau of Customs, the Bureau of
Internal Revenue and other government agencies who can't explain their
wealth when questioned why their SALs always bloat even if they have not
so high paying jobs.

7. Sure way to win the lottery grand prize is to bet at all possible numbers i.e. about 29 million lotto tickets worth about PhP580M. This is only feasible, and if the PCSO will allow it, when the jackpot hits more than that prize...just keep your fingers crossed that you're the only one who placed a bet on the winning number combination :P

LCD TV Brands, Prices, Service Centers Information Needed

I'm really shopping for a new LCD TV to be used by my son in his playroom. Want something larger than 21 inches.

I canvassed around Centris Station SM Hypermarket and saw some cheap brands of LCD TVs including TCL LCD TV, Coby LCD TV, CDR King LCD TV, Fukuda LCD TV, Changhong LCD TV, Promac LCD TV, Nextbase, Union, Pensonic, Matrix, Skyworth LCD TV et al

a 19" LCD TV costs around PhP12,000.00 while the 22 inches around P4k more expensive. I wonder if anyone out there can give me LCD TV reviews and feedback, as well as problems where you have to take it to authorized service centers for repairs even if out of warranty.

Some names that came on my search popular with Home Theater enthusiasts: Theater Works (used to be in Trinoma but now selling online), Sights and Sounds 4th Level Shangri-la Mall, The Home Theater on Tordesillas St, Salcedo Village Makati. You might try your luck at Western Trinoma; Savers Appliance Depot, SM Appliance and Abenson's and even stores on Raon, Quiapo Surplus LCD TV's (try Manila South Harbor (Pier)).

I will update this post once I bought my own LCD TV...

UPDATE: I bought a Samsung Series 3 32" LCD TV for P21,000.00 with wall mounting brackets at P1050 (inlcuding installation) and P200 delivery (though I picked it up to save this)

Slow Facebook Access on Sun Broadband Internet

Though I've never been fondof Facebook and other social networking sites, I can't help but setup at least a Facebook page formy main blog. Problem's that accessing Facebook using Sun Broadband Internet is next to useless.

When I try to access my facebook page to post updates on my blog, allI can see is an incomplete main page. It's like this for many weeks now, don't know how long for I really don't access Facebook that much.

I called up Sun Hotline and I they informed me about the advisory on slow facebook access. No timeline was given on when this can be fixed too. It's probably a invisible proxy server problem or content delivery hiccup.

Samsung Corby GT-S3653 Bluetooth Problem on Windows Vista

I tried to download my pictures taken by my Samsung Corby to my Windows Vista laptop and I can't connect, getting errors. I can browse and get files from my PC (files on the Bluetooth share folder) but not the other way around.

Note that I can do this on my Nokia E63 aand other Nokia phones but not here on Samsung Corby. Tried uploading it from my phone but it also doesn't work. Tried various settings to no avail.

Tried to find solutions online but can't find one that really solved my problem. Once I tried to buy a USB cable for Samsung Corby on Raon, Quiapo, Manila and even CDR King but didn't find one. I'm currently installing Samsung New PC Studio, something like Nokia PC Suite to test bluetooth functionality. I wonder if I' encounter the same problems for Cherry Mobile, Torque or myPhone cellphones with scant information, hard-to-find service service centers and local support forums.

UPDATE: Problem solved by using Samsung New PC Studio. It can also pose problems for Windows XP and Windows 7as well as other Samsung phones.

Transfer Funds to Paypal Account from Local Banks

Perhaps a question that needs answers from many people is that Paypal can transfer funds to a Philippine bank account but not the other way around

Well, first we need to know how Paypal transfers funds to your Philippine bank account, say, Metrobank, BDO, or BPI or any BancNet, Megalink or Expressnet bank. It does so using Automated Clearing House (ACH) in New York with a foreign bank as transferer ala-IBFT of BancNet or BSP's PhilPass system.

But how come you can't fund Paypal account from your Philippine bank account? You can only do so with a credit card as of the moment.

It's because technically, Paypal is not allowed to do business in the Philippines, that's according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines), mainly due to consumer protection concerns where they don't have a branch or presence in the country and also they need to be issued an e-money license as required by BSP Circular 649.

I hope to see the day when I can do fund transfers to Paypal using my BPI and Chinabank ATM cards...not in the near future perhaps.

Nikon D7000 Price in Hidalgo, Quiapo, Manila?

Even if I was able to repair my 2.5 years old Nikon D80 and looking at upgrading to D90, I'm drooling for the new Nikon D7000 which came out last month.

I still can't find information on where I can buy the Nikon D7000 in Manila, particularly on Hidalgo, Quiapo. I suspect it's in the price range of P60k though.

Nikon D80 Err: Aperture Lens Problem, DIY Repair?

Nikki, my 2.5 year old Nikon 80 stopped working after a few shots while I was taking a picture of my baby. The initial symptom is a different sound of the shutter then underexposed pictures.

I'm now looking for DIY Nikon DLSR Camera Repair Guide, if there's one so I can again save a few bucks, even some pictures of how to open my DSLR camera, tinker with the shutter mechanism, repair it myself.

Nikki just displays Err on the LCD monitor and won't take a shot. REset by taking out the battery didn't help. Tried to clean the lens contacts using contact cleamer on the body and using a different lens, a 50mm f1.8, didn't help either. Note that my camera is attached always to a Nikkor 18-200 F/3.5-5.6 VR and seldom separated from each other.

If I can't do it myself, Imay have to go find nikon camera repair shops on Hidaldo St. in Quiapo, Manila or bring it to Columbia (CDSC) somehwere in Frisco (but i know it will cost me an arm and a leg so I'd rather not).

I think it's time to upgrade toa Nikon D90 or a cheaper D5000 or D60 then sell my dear Nikki!

How to Play Farmville on iPhone 3G/3GS/4 sans Flash?

Wifey wants a shiny new iPhone 4, recently launched, to replace her 2 year old iPhone 3G. She wants to play Zynga's Farmville while she's away but since I again researched for a solution, hack, or tips on doing so...

It seems you really can't play Farmville on iPhone as long as Apple won't support Adobe Flash on iPhone platform. You're better off buying a new phone that supporst flash or ditch iPhone.

I still can't find an alternative software for Adobe Flash for the iPhone so I can't help you

Fighting Pride (Pacquiao’s Theme) Download: Free Torrent?

Manny pacquiao's official theme song titles Fighting Pride (Pacquiao’s Theme) was recently released digitally

Manny Pacquiao theme song is a collaboration with Filipino-Scottish rock band Rag Rag and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Madonna Decena. It features Pacquiao intro message “Deliver me from this fight, to honor you in my country.”

If you're looking for Fighting Pride (Pacquiao’s Theme) download, you need to pay for it, no such thing as a free download as it's really copyrighted, some call it piracy tantamount to stealing. Ringtones may be bought on Jamster or Thumbplay.

Truth or Hoax Dengue Cure: Tawa-tawa, Durian, Papaya Leaves and Camote Tops

With the rising cases of dengue in the Philippines, there are so many desperate people looking for alternative cures not offered by modern medicines.

Some of those alleged to have a cure for dengue includes the tawa-tawa, a weed wose tea concoction rumored to be very effective; durian, that stinking fruit; papaya leaves, and camote tops. (i wonder where can i get or buy tawa-tawa plant here in Quezon City (Manila))

All I can say is that the miracle cures were not really proven as of this time and most dengue cure cases have no evidence that they were really caused by the alternative medicines given.

There's still no confirmed cure for dengue but you can't blame the folks for trying. Just hope and pray that that the dengue cures listed above don't interfere with the other dengue medicines given to the patient.

lastly, give paracetamol to the dengue patient, not aspirin as it induces bleeding.

Virus Spam Emails from Wordpres.Us Domain

I've been receiving lately many spam emails with blank subjects and with just a link to a website using the domain Wordpres.Us

Apparently it uses the username of the email address of the sender and creates a subdomain and a blog post of the spammed product e.g. for username the URL would be like

http://username.wordpres.us/07/10/the-effect-this-menopause-medication-produce-on-my-health.html

Solutions and Countermeasure:

I sent an email advisory on the spam email, instructed our email administrator to block the keyword wordpres.us and blocked wordpress.us in our company proxy server. No idea yet on what virus is causing the sending of the spoof email messages yet as I'm feeling lazy.

Megaforce Transformers Talking Car Alarm (Cobra)

A very good conversation starter for those not familiar with my car, a Toyota Vios 1.5G A/T, is the talking car alarm that says "Megaforce alarm deactivated" when I unlock the doors using the remote control key fob.

The Megaforce car alarm is a talking model, when Cobra security no longer produces the product. the various warnings said by the robot voice that reminds you of Optimus Prime of the Transformers:

Locked: "Megaforce Alarm Activated"
Unlocked: "Megaforce Alarm Deactivated"
Engine Started and door open: "Please close the door"
on sensing vibration: "This car is protected by Megaforce, please go away!"

all voice warnings come with loud siren sound that sometimes is too tiresome though.

Where did i buy my talking car alarm? head over to ebay philippines, it's there. Price of mine was P3500 with P200 installation fee. If you're adventurous enough head over to Banawe in Quezon City, the car enthusiasts haven and lair of hooligans or jsut have them delivered to you as offered by several online merchants.

Suzuki APV Features, Price, and Safety Record Wanted

I'm evaluating this early a replacement to my Toyota Vios 1.5G 2006 due for de-commisioning next year when it reaches my five year car plan

I need a new car that can seat more than 5 person typical of sedans so I'm crossing out the Hyundai Tucson due to it being just a 5-seater and pricey at P1M.

I'm looking at the not-so-pricey Suzuki APV but I can't find a good review of Suzuki APV 2011. It's currently priced in between the Toyota Avanza and Toyota Innova for the diesel variant automatic transmission (i don't like manual transmission, M/T vs A/T) with the 8-seater, 1.6L engine displacement.

Other options are the much pricier Toyota Innova, Mitsubishi Adventure or Fuzion, Isuzu Highlander and the Nissan Grand Livina.

If you own a Suzuki APV, can you give me both positive and negative feedback and comments, latest Suzuki APV price as well as maintenance costs and spare parts availability.

R3 Car Smoke Emission Testing Center (near LTO Makati) should be Investigated

When I had my car registered last year at LTO Makati, I looked for a vehicle emission testing on J.P. Rizal St. first to have my Toyota Vios smoke emission test prior to proceeding to LTO Makati for my DIY registration

The smoke emission test took only a few minutes from payment of smoke emission fees (P350 for smal cars + the questionable P80 IT/Interconnectivity Fee) at the counter, waited a few minutes for my turn.

What surprised me was that my car was never actually tested for smoke emission. All
R3 did was place the smoke emission machine near my car, put the "catheter" inside my exhaust then let somebody take a picture of the smoke emissions technician with my car plate number in view then made me wait for my fake results.

I know I can really pass the car vehicle smoke emission test for it was just three years then but it's a questionable practice, not all 3 year old cars are well-maintained.

And whenever i hear about the no appearance car registration racket of some people, even without vehicle smoke emission tests, they're the ones to blame for the black smoke emitted by some vehicles, even public utility jeepneys, and the smog of metro manila.

so much for the clean air act :(

Be a responsible car owner, maintain your vehicle and reduce your carbon footprint!

Speedy Fix (Shaw) Auto Repair Shop

After the pathetic service of Class A Motorcraft on the faulty installation of the fuel filter and fuel pump of my Toyota Vios, I decided to have my car towed to Speedy Fix on Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong to have it fixed in a jiffy

Speedy Fix fixed my car in an hour due to improper installation of the fuel filter gasket by Class A Motorcraft Banawe that resulted to not starting problem caused by loss of fuel pressure.

I also had my rear power window repaired by Speedy Fix that they did so by just cleaning the power window motor and gears.

After about a month my power window malfunctioned again but I didn't have the time to bring it back to Speedy Fix due to my busy schedule.

About three months later, I experienced problem starting my car that looked like a low battery problem but it always starts.

I asked my wife to bring it to the battery shop around the corner, where I bought the Outlast battery, and had it tested. It was found to be fully-charged and so I ruled out a problem with the alternator or grounded electrical system that's causing the hard-starting problem.

Decided to bring it to Speedy Fix again to check the starting problem and also the power window. The mechanic on duty diagnosed it to be either a battery problem (that I contested since the battery's been cleared to be fine) or faulty electrical wiring that's draining my car battery and is out of Speedy Fix's "expertise" and so recommended my car to be checked at an auto electrical shop.

I requested my wife to bring it to Wizzard Auto Electrical shop on Tomas Morato in Quezon City but she can't find the shop being a typical direction-challenged woman that she is. Decided instead to have it checked by an auto electrician and specifically pointed him my suspicion that there's a problem with the starter motor that's causing the starting problem.

It turned out the vios' starter motor only needed cleaning of electrodes. Dirty motor contacts cleaned and it's now starting in one click. Note that a motor that's not turning looks like a short circuit that's why it looked like a drained battery where even my digital gauge blacked out due to lack of electric short introduced by the nearly stuck starter motor.

All in all, problems like misdiagnosis happens all the time (for it's best to look for second or third opinions on problems that may be costly for you). At least Speedy Fix fixed my faulty power window almost three months after they looked at it (good thing I still have my receipt) for free probably covered by warranty.

This post has some negative feedback on Speedy Fix but overall I'm satisfied with them. Would I recommend SpeedyFix to my peers and friends? I already did. One of them just had his car running with Royal Purple synthetic oil from them and I may follow suit.

Google Adsense Payments Delayed

I may not be the only one but my Google Adsense earnings for July was not sent by Google to me. It took a long time for my july 2010 earnings to be processed and be visible on my Google Adsense dascboard earnings history

I usually hold my payments every six months to coincide with my renewal of dollar time deposit where all my Adsense earnings go (for my retirement fund or foreign travel expenses)

My PS dollar time deposit's due on August 3 so I release the hold on my account before June 15.

Problem's that probably due to Google's too busy it was already August when they posted my earnings for July and also did not release my payment earnings.

Anyway, will just wait for next payment release cycle here.

"Cheap," "EVIL" Cameras: Olympus Pen, Lumix GF1 and Samsung NX10

The latest challengers to the DSLR market are the so-called EVIL cameras, EVIL stands for Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens and unlike bulky DSLR cameras, don't have mirrors in them.

Popular EVIL cameras, with the size or small point-and-shoot cameras but the resolution of DSLR cameras, are the Olympus Pen, Lumix GF1 and the Samsung NX10. The usual feature of DSLR is also there with the interchangeable lenses. There's no EVIL camera product from either Nikon and Canon yet but expect the price of EVIL cameras to fall when the two camera giants enter the market.

For now, those EVIL cameras are priced at about PhP40k, approximately the price for a mid-range DSLR body.

I think I'm going to forgo upgrading my Nikon D80 for now to wait and see how this EVIL camera will come to play next year.

AVG Miniport Driver Messed Up My Network Connections

I downloaded and installed AVG 9 on my Lenovo S10-2 netbook but my network connections instantly got messed up. I thought it was something else when I checked Hardware Manager of Windows XP and founf out AVG miniport drivers not working correctly

I uninstalled AVG but the problem didn't go away. I unistalled my network card (NIC) then re-installed it and fixed the problem for my LAN connection but my USB modem (Sun wireless broadband and Globe Tatoo) didn't work. Can't uninstall AVG IP Miniport driver for Windows XP said it's needed by the system to start Windows.

Using my bestfriend Google on another laptop, I was intructed to download avgremover.exe from AVG official website, run it and now my USB modem's now working.

Now I need a better free anti-virus for my home computer without messing up my PC.

GPS Routing Errors Open Street Map Philippines

For quite some time now I've been using OSM (Open Street Map) on my Garmin nuvi 1300 not asa navigational tool but to map my area to be usedby my direction-challenged wife someday.

On my first days of using OSM, already found several bugs and routes that lead to nowhere some of these are:

1. Roosevelt avenue from EDSA Munoz up to certain area has a center island that doesn't actually exist. Status: corrected a few months ago

2. Some U-turn slots on EDSA near Munoz missing. Status: Corrected

Pending map errors that need correction/updating (it's still too complex for me to do this on Potlatch and I can't find the time to learn either JOSM or Merkaator)

1. Mandaluyong:

Pioneer St has a center island from the EDSA-Boni tunnel up to the entrance of Legend Villas therefore you can't turn left from Pioneer to Madison St or turn left from Madison St to Pioneer due to the center island obstruction

2. Quezon City

Del Monte Avenue (frisco) doesn't have a center island except on the bridge near Roosevelt Avenue. Also, it narrows down from 4 lanes to a traffic-prone 2 lanes from the bridge up to West Avenue

the E. Rodriguez and Araneta Avenue intersection doesn't allow left or right turns to the other but use the u-turns (some missing). Turn restrictions should be added as well as matching u-turn slots. I pass by this area everyday on my daily trip to work but i've yet to gather tracks to update OSM for this one

3. Cainta, Rizal

Ortigas Avenue from Ortigas Bridge to another bridge near Junction (Felix avenue, Imelda Avenue and Ortigas Avenue extension). This messes up routing if you're going to Countryside and De Castro even Super 8, Ever et al

4. EDSA

Several u-turn slots missing e.g. those under Kamuning flyover for the EDSA to East Avenue and Timog Avenue

5. Makati

I have to check out the intersection of Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas might be the one giving me those routing errors that i thought were just due to GPS errors introduced by the tall buildings. Will have to confirm this though

6. Pasig City

C-5 and Ortigas Avenue corner has missing turn restriction and u-turn slots.

I have quite a collection mostly due to missing U-turn slots and turn restrictions or a center island in the middle of the road that really doesn't exist. I've corrected some missing road links and breaks but most of the map bugs i listed above are too much for me at of the moment.

If you stumbled on this post and know the area I'm talking about, you can update the map yourself at the Open Street Map official website.

Globe Advisory 8888: Free Unlimited Calls and Text to Globe and TM

As a postpaid subsriber of Globe who's just got my new 128k SIM card, I received this text message from Globe Advisory 8888 today:

"Globe Advisory: Experience the power of your new SIM! You can now use your free one-day unlimited calls and texts to Globe and TM!"

we all know TM is Touch Mobile, marketed as Tatak Mindanao in Mindanao...
I just hope the Globe promo free texts and calls are permanent hehe

this is not a hoax nor a scam...I know someone from Globe :P

Another Text Spam from a Leading HMO

I received a text message again alerting me that i've won something or my SIM card was chosen for a gift

text message from 09326258426 reads:

"A leading HMO company is giving away FREE MEDICAL PRIVILEGE CARD plus a raffle entry for our KITCHEN SHOWCASE DRAW. An additional gift worth P6,800.00 will be awarded if you call NOW! 3865797 and 386022 or SUN NUMBER 09326258426, 09223338700 and look for MS. NICOLE ADVIENTO. Thank you and God Bless! (DISREGARD IFCLAIMED)"

note that this is similar to the Prudentialife text where you need to call ASAP and claim your prize so as not to forfeit your gift. But you need to bring your credit card so they can easily swipe it for instant approval of your health card or insurance policy.

warning and advice: DON'T waste your time on this one...this may not be a hoax nor scam but their methods of getting clients is unethical...be forewarned

Garmin GPS Routing Algorithm: How Does it Make Decisions on Routes to Take?

I've been trying to search Google for clues on garmin routing algorithm that it uses to make decisions on routes from one point to another.

I used to be an inter-network routing engineer, mostly using BGP and OSPF, to find the optimum path packets should take to reach the destination. GPS routing is no different, I know there are certain parameters to tweak in order to affect the route calculations Garmin GPS (like my Garmin Nuvi 1300) make.

This is not exhaustive but I know these parameters and certain tags matter but I still don't know which ones take precedence over the other in routing decisions:

1. Total distance (probably the single most influential in logic calculations)
2. Highway classification (toll roads, trunk, primary, seconday, tertiary, residential, service road et al)
3. Number of lanes
4. Maximum speed

GPS settings such as Ecoroute (fastest or most fuel efficient route) also count on this one for sometimes, the routes suggested by a GPS unit differs from Garmin Mapsource.

Anyone who can leave a definitive study on Garmin routing algorithm please leave a comment.

Fastest Mobile Internet: Smart Bro, Globe Tattoo, Sun Cellular Brodband Wireless?

Do you believe everything you see on tv? when SmartBro made commercials claiming 9 out of ten speed tests show it's faster than Globe Tattoo? And you believed that commercial crap?

As if Internet speed tests are really objective and also lacks various other parameters. For me, it all boils down to location, location, location

In Paete, Laguna, the fastest USB mobile broadband Internet there is Globe Tattoo. Smart Bro has very weak and intermittent signal. No Sun cellular 3G there the last time I went home

At home in QC and also in my Makati office, Sun Cellular reigns supreme...I can get the full 2 Mbps downloads except at certain times like 5pm like but still my Globe Tattoo and my officemate's Smart Bro can't match

If you're in doubt or want to leave a comment, please be objective. I will post actual speed test results here

The iPod cannot be Synced. An unknown Error occured (-53)

My iPod Video 30GB got ressurected recetly with the upgrading of my Toyota Vios 1.5G's head unit (car stereo) with iPod control

I got to update my Mp3 song collections and therefore my iPod by I keep on getting this error: "The iPod cannot be Synced. An unknown Error occured (-53)" everytime I try to sync the iPod even with latest version of Apple iTunes.

Fortunately, my iPod does sync even with the error whenever I update my iTunes library. The error is still there but it doesn't matter if i have the solution to the pesky error problem.

Pedro Romualdo and Prospero Nograles' Legacy: The Non-passing of the Freedom of Information Bill

It's such a very frustrating news that after 24 years and several Houses of Congresesses had come and go, a basic right enshrined in the Constitution, The Freedom of Information Act was not passed by the House of Representatives

I was waiting closely the Inquirer.Net breaking news when the sad news of it's non-passing was displayed. As usual, The House of Representathieves wasn't able to get a quorum due to always absent "honorable" congressmen in a junket somewhere.

However, as it was tradition to even pass important priority bills even without a quorum, it was a motion to a roll call made by Camiguin Representative Pedro Romualdo that ultimately killed the bill.

Note the Senate already approved the bill and called on the House of Representathieves to do the same, but this horrorable congressman from Camiguin spoiled it all in the name of the rule to have a quorum first.

Such is the the legacy of Camiguin Representative Pedro Romualdo and also of House Speaker Prospero Nograles: the non-passing of the Freedom of Information Act.

Let's just leave it to the next congress, this time with the help of president-elect Noynoy Aquino, to pass the bill promoting transparency in all government transactions always laden with SOP, graft, kickbacks and under the table deals.

If only it's legal to just terminate all absent congressmen and the one who filed the motion for a roll call....

sigh...

Define Jejemon: Not So Cool Text Speak Leads to Miseducation

Definition of Jejemon: People using weird and mangled text speak from Jeje that young people think is cool but actiually leads them to ignorance of the English language and poor spelling

So many text messages you receive from Jejemons just to let the word know they're cool and yet they actually don't get it that by using such crude text speak and mangled spellings, they're actually letting their brains die and wither or not lead them to the correct path of learning...

So if you're a Jejemon, kick out the habit and start learning English seriously. I've seen serious people admit using text speak made them idiots in English that even their bosses noticed wrong grammar/spellings at official business correspondeces and memos...much more if you're a Jejemon, you won't get far.

Possible entry words:
ano ibig sabihin ng Jejemon, Jeje world, Jejemon examples, Jeje language

Class A Motorcraft Banawe Car Repair Shop Woes

For about a week i've experienced hard starting of my Vios 1.5g in the morning and in the evening when I'm about to go home.

Since I live 10 minutes away from Banawe, I searched for "reliable" and "dependable" shops in the area, quite far from the pesky freelancers.

I chose Class A Motorcraft Service Shop as recommended by some people in this forum where I lurk and occasionaly post. I called them up for an appointment that they said i drop by at 1pm.

Since i've done research on the problem, mention of fuel pump check valve problem that can be checked by switching ignition key from off to on about three or four times before cranking and indeed my car starts.

When i got to Motorcraft on Banaue, Quezon City i spoke to the mechanic (eric) and told him of my problems and suspicion that it's the fuel pump and asked if they can do the residual fuel pressure test to verify (i've done my research, i know the theory but i wanted to see experienced people actually perform it). He mentioned my problem's with the fuel filter, being not a mechanic, but an aspiring DIY mechanic, i gave in to his diagnosis based on my narration.

Motorcraft replaced my fuel filter supposedly with an original toyota fuel filter worth P2000 (i called up toyota casa and i was quoted P2452 for this so it's about ok) plus P550 labor.

On initial starting after installation, I had to crank 3 times just to start (my original problem) but another mechanic told me it's normal for a newly-installed filter...

After leaving the shop and told the mechanic I'll just observe later if the hard-starting problem is solved. I drove to a spa on west avenue for my hedonistic pursuits and to alleviate my back pain. On leaving the spa, starting the engine was harder with several attempts but was able to start it after several tries and drove home.

The following morning, my car won't start after many tries, even if i toggle the key from On to Off. I'm pretty sure it's a fuel system problem-- fuses and relays fine, no error codes (i have my own OBD II scanner), sparks plugs ok and car seems to start, shakes then dies as if there's no gas (on a half-full gas tank)

I called up Motorcraft Banawe about the problem, spoke to Eric and, after speaking to his boss Robert Ong, informed me they're going to check my car and requested for my contact numbers to call me back and coordinate.

I filed an emergency leave from work just to wait for Motorcraft guys to arrive and check my car but no people, not even a text or call came.

I called them again at 5pm (using my cellphone for 10 minutes) to inquire if they're really coming and was able to personally talk to Robert Ong, who told me it's not the fuel filter they installed but probably something else, and committed again to come to my home to personally check my car.

Next day, I left my car keys at home and requested my mom to wait for Robert Ong and company but they again never came...no text, no call on my cellphone nor at my office phone that also logs all missed calls.

My car not starting problem may not be their doing, but they misdiagnosed my complaint and installed a filter that i still don't need, since I've only 26,000 kilometers on my odometer, made me cough out P2550.00.

Second, they promised, not once, but twice, to come to my aid but reneged on their promise...how "reliable" and "dependable"

as a rememdy, I called up Speedy Fix, highly recommended motor repair shop on Shaw Boulevard in mandaluyong and had my Toyota Vios towed there. Speedy Fix mechanic needed less than an hour to fix my car with the culprit-- incorrectly installed gasket of the fuel pump that gave way and leaked. Something Motorcraft could have corrected easily if they only went to my house as they promised thus this negative feedback of their supposedly good reputation.

I was charged P500 by Speedy Fix, something that should've been charged to Motorcraft for their "class A" service...just charged it to experience again.

Wu Travel Affiliate Program, Scam?

This is a post on the Wu Travel Affiliate where a Wu travel agent will approach blog owners for marketing their travel booking website http://www.wutravel.com for hotels in Asia

I did get my $50 sign-up bonus and accumulated bookings translating to earnings well over $100 already. Problem is that even if their Wu Travel Affiliate program declares I will get paid monthly when my earnings reach $100, many months now and i've yet to receive mine thru my paypal account

I don't know if they're really legitimate but their non-payment of affiliates doesn't speak well of them. I will post a similar blog entry on my travel blog and probably a viral warning for people to stop booking their hotels online at Wu Travel.

Wu Travel people, pay up. It seems i'm not the only travel blogger ranting about you. You don't know the power of blogs linking together and can translate to bad business on your side.

For now, i've removed their banner on my travel site and let Wu Travel people find this post, wait for a few days for a response before I bash them on my travel blog.

Warning: don't book travel arrangements with Wu Travel if they can't honor their word

Comelec/Smartmatic PCOS Machine Malfunction Cost Me My Vote This Election

I went home to Paete, Laguna at 6am this morning just to cast my vote for the Philippines' first Automated election.

Arrived in Paete at 930am, walked to Ibaba Elementary School, saw the long lines at the gates, didn't bother to check inside, went straight home, ordered pancit canton at Benga's Panciteria, ate a hearty meal, took a nap, chatted with my parents, went back to the poll precints at 1pm

My parents and li'l sister were able to vote at their precincts for about 15 minutes, but my name, i found listed on the next precint incidentally has a non-working PCOS (precint count optical scanner) machine that made a very long queue. (Question: what's the COMELEC's rationale for separating members of the same households to different precincts/)

I went home again to eat lunch, waited for 3pm, got back to my precinct still with PCOS machine error

Since I don't have the luxury of time to wait, I decided to just go straight back home to Quezon City, leaving me one of many disenfranchised voters out there.

At least I tried, unlike many others who didn't even bothered to vote, and who has no right to question the government for their inefficiency and corrupt ways

Project Full Moon: Plan to Cheat the May 2010 Elections

I received a text message this morning from an anonymous sender with this allegation of cheating to be done on May 10, 2010 automated elections. the SMS message says:

"A1 Information: DND Sec. Norberto Gonzales will manage the d May election cheating thru GEN. bangit, GEN. Prestoza's project FULLMOON, in favor of Manny Villar...FVR, PUNO, & GMA are behind ds dirty tactics w/ a certain computer hacker MARTIN LEEBIONG a Korean National. HE WILL DO THE SWITCHING OF PREPARED CD, pls. Pass so FIlipinos will know dis evil plan, from Chit Saavedra, Cp No. 09091388077. pls pass ASAP"

I don't really know where the text message came from or where he got the information and where he got the idea that in order to cheat in the coming elections, he only needs to swap CDs to do it and using the services of an alleged korean hacker.

I have yet to see the actual PCOS (precint count optical scan) machines to be used in the automated elections but I know they're not using CDs but flash cards, where the defective flash cards made news on tv.

It's really possible to cheat the automated elections using not so high-tech means by infiltrating the ranks of the COMELEC-- the weakest link which are the people manning the machines, the operators and crooked insiders.

The plot the cheat outlined here is unbelievable actuall but not impossible. Utmost vigilance is needed to thwart such evil attempts to cheat in the elections.

I guess i'll still see brownouts on election day, like what I normally see in my hometown Paete, Laguna :(

Brownouts on Election Day: Still Effective Way to Cheat in the 2010 Automated Elections?

I've seen it happen over the past elections at least in my hometown Paete, Laguna. Some "wisemen" would find a way to trip electric supply at least of the elementary schools where counting of ballots at the precint levels are still on-going. that was the manual elections of the past.

Come this May 2010 automated elections using the new COMELEC system of Precint Count Optical System machines utilizing scanners to scan ballots shaded with the candidates circcles, would browouts still be able to hide the cheaters doing their dirty tricks?

I just hope backup batteries and generators would really be deployed to ensure fair and honest elections without delay. As fas as i know, election day browouts can only delay the electoral process but will not affect the vote count and tally. If the cheaters can swap the flashcards, hack into the voting machines, tap into the network (wireless, GPRS, EDGE, 3G) of the telcos and alter the data being sent probably aided by evil COMELEC insiders like e-Garci at night when it's dark but I think most of the ballots are already scanned, transmitted and thus counted by COMELEC servers located inside the datacenter.

Cheaters have PhDs in manual election cheating but the automated elections is a different ballgame requiring new tools and tricks of the trade.

Sun Mobile Internet: BitTorrent Blocked/Filtered

I'm a Sun Mobile Broadband Internet postpaid unlimited subscriber for many months now, shelling out P649.00/month (due to my postpaid cellphone plan). Though I'm aware of their terms of service for unlimited plan, I was able to use the torrent network to download stuff

Just last week, my Sun Internet slowed down in Makati, I use it after office hours to check my blog, but it just switches connection from WCDA to HSDPA, reaches no more than 50 kbps then times out.

I called up Sun Internet hotline (333 on mobile phone or 895-3333 on a landline) and reported the problem. I was informed there was a network maintenance on-going that affected my Sun mobile internet use (not slow, but unusable browsing).

Today, I tested it again and it was back to its earlier speed that reaches 2Mbps at times (much faster than Smart Bro and Globe Tattoo) but my uTorrent client can no longer connect and download my precious torrent files.

I will now find ways to bypass Sun Internet filters to enable bittorrent network access, probably a SSH tunnel, TOR network or a torrent proxy (if you know of any hack or how to enable torrents in Sun cellular, please do leave a comment)

Will post about my torrent exploit later :P

COMELEC: Check Your Voter Registration and Voting Precinct Online

For people like me living in Metro Manila (or elsewhere) and yet continue to be registered in my hometown (Paete for me of course), I can now check if there's any problem with my voter registration if I'm no longer included in the voters list (for those who did not vote during past elections)

You can view your voter registration online on the COMELEC website.
this is handy for me for I'm still registered in my hometown in Laguna.

You need to enter your full name (first, middle and family names) and birthday to get your precinct number, town/city, barangay and other information here. At least you no longer have to manually look for your name the precint number list posted on the precinct, quite a daunting task for large communities.

Let's just hope there are few disenfranchised voters (some disenfranshisements were intentional where known supporters of rival candidates forced/paid not to vote)

DIY Car Audio Upgrade on a Limited Budget for Better Sound Quality (SQ)

I'm now embarking on upgrading my car audio sound setup to improve the so-called SQ (sound quality). I just want it simple where I can hear clearly every words said, the highs and lows and mids in perfect balance

from what I know on how to improve car sound system, these are the steps and instructions I intend to do:

1. Change the car stereo/ head unit. we all know that the OEM/stock head unit sounds like you're listening to a tin can. The Toyota Vios 1.5G head unit from Fujitsu Ten sounded like that. I already upgraded this to a Pioneer DEH-2250UBG with Auxiliary Input, USB and Direct iPod control with highly noticeable sound quality difference. It's a 1-DIN unit that's why I bought spacers to fit the original 2-DIN slot of Toyota Vios.

2. Change the stock speakers, all four of them. My car has four speakers, two on the front door panels and two rear speakers on the backboard. I was thinking if is should really replace them to improve since I'm on a very limited budget. The bass output is quite ok for my taste but not the highs so I figured I will just add at least two tweeters and two capacitors. I only need to know where to place them.

3. Install a subwoofer to get more ooomph in your lows and bass sound. I was quoted a price of P3.5k by C3 Audio on Banawe, Quezon City with the speaker enclosure to be placed inside the trunk. I wonder how it would sound like. I value my trunk space so i'm thinking about it so as not to lose precious space for Poging's walker, stroller and other stuff. A separate amplifier for the subwoofer is usually recommended. I'm planning though to just use a cheap subwoofer setup from a computer PC, the one that comes with two small speakers that costs about P1200 only. I won two of these, two years in a row, from our company raffle and powered by 220 Volts, I only need to change the power source to 12 Volts DC and look for the place, preferably the backboard to install the subs.

4. DIY deadening of car doors and trunk, probably roof and floors too. Cheap materials for this is Flashband, a brand of waterproofing fastened to you car's surfaces to lessen road noise, eliminate rattles and unwanted vibrations and some claim added clarity on bass and mid-bass sound.

Other ideas on improving car sound quality are welcome. I will try to experiment on things. Also the Toyota Vios 1.5G seems to be deadend already so I will look for ways to minimize rattles and resonating panels.

Latest Earthquake in Metro Manila: Epicenter Still Unknown

It just passed, an earthquake with still unknown intensity struck Makati (and also Metro Manila). My office building somewhere in Makati just shook for about 40 seconds. Some of my officemates got dizzy

I looked out the window to see other tall buildings as I'm located on the 19th floor of our building. People just walking around, cars passing down below unaware though it was really shaking up here.

No photos/pictures as it's probably not centered in Makati. Just wait for the latest news of the earthquake and hope it's not bad. Will look for the official news from Philvocs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) for this one.

Update: The Inquirer reported it's an intensity 6.2 earthquake that hit metro manila today, March 25, 2010.

Windows Vista Explorer Hangs When Deleting/Renaming Files

I'm the only one in the this freakin' office using Windows Vista since I need to test and learn if our company needs to upgrade our mostly Windows XP to Windows Vista or maybe straight to Windows 7.

My Windows Vista Basic runs fine (but not my Lenovo Ideapad Y430 with a new LCD screen) until a couple of days ago when I noticed Windows Explorer hangs whenever I try to delete a file, rename or do some to other things. Task Manager won't show it's not responding.

Further tests prove only the current Windows Explorer window freezes and opening a new one will work but the window activity telling you the file is being sent to the Recycle Bin won't close and freeze on screen but you can minimize.

I will just use task Manager to re-start Windows Explorer but I need to find the solution to the problem. I checked if my system needs a patch but no software upgrade is available (my system's always updated as it should always be). This also affects Firefox browser (or Internet Explorer) whenever I need to save a downloaded file since it also uses Windows explorer in the background.

Asking google for solutions ended up with the question still unanswered "Windows Explorer has stopped working" problem.

SmartBro "USB Modem is Unavailable" Error Problem and Solution?

An officemate of mine bought a new SmartBro Broadban Internet plugit (a ZTE MF627) that doesn't work on her laptop, a Compaq Presario V3000. As the "resident evil" techie even with the IT Technical Support around, she asked for my help.

The SmartBro receives a 3G signal (HSDPA) but everytime I try to connect to the Internet, a pop up window with error message says: "USB Modem is unavailable"

At first I thought it's a conflict with the Sun Broadband also installed so I uninstalled the softare using the Programs in Control Panel, tried again but the error remained.

I then tried uninstalling the SmartBro also in Programs, then re-installed but again, to no avail, error remains.

Note that Device Manager reports no error, conflicts or driver problems.

For now I'm downloading the ZTE MF627 driver for Windows XP/2000 (there alre also available free ZTE MF627 driver downloads fro Linux, Macintosh (Mac), even Windows 7.

If the new driver fails, there must be something with the notebooks hardware or software installation that's incompatible with the ZTE USB modem or needed a patch/software upgrade.

Will continue to troubleshoot this problem as I can't find solutions online even on blogs and forums that even Smart customer support cant solve :(

Firefox Hangs with Gmail and Google Buzz

For days now I'm experiencing firefox crashes or hangups due to an unresponsive script while accessing my Gmail account. I found out it must be connected to Google Buzz, the Twitter-like service of Google added to Gmail

with several error messages and crash reports, I switched to HTML version (though you can also switch to the older version with chat) to remedy the problem until Google fixes it.

Using HTML version is also lightweight but you need to check your emails manually to refresh and update unlike the standard version.

I'm using the latest version of firefox and i initially suspected one of my add-ons messing up.

DJ Grace Lee Skiing Accident in Korea

Now this is showbiz but not your typical showbiz fodder.

Heard on Showbiz Central that DJ Grace Lee, that loveable DJ of magic 89.9, met an accident in Korea while skiing.

Skiing in itself is dangerous but I heard the details narrated by DJ Mo this morning during my daily drive to the office that Grace attempted to ski on a course for advanced/intermediate level and hurt herself in the process. Imagine Grace in bandages with broken arms (or ribs)...that must've hurt...and Grace Lee must've really cried due to the pain.

Grace Lee, take care of yourself will you? Though I i really don't like showbiz, you're one of those faces I'd love to see. You're more Filipina than most Filipinas I know when it comes to loving our country even if you're really Korean.

Download Heroes Season 5 Episodes, No More?

I just can't hide the fact that I'm such a huge fan of NBC's Heroes tv series. The very much delayed broadcast of the hit series on RPN 9 on Monday nights I also patronize just to get my Heroes fix.

For now i can't find the latest news about Heroes from NBC due to poor ratings of such an expensive series.

Yeah, I'm one of those wishing Peter gets his full powers back and a collosal battle with a supervillain but I know special effects are expensive thus limiting the budget probably why the fight between Sylar, Peter and his brother was not shown.

When can i have my dose of the latest Heroes Season 5 Episode torrent/free download since I can't watch Heroes episodes onlin here in the Philippines.

Why Don't I Receive Text Messages to My Sun Cellular?

I was informed of this lately when I sent SMS to several friends but no replies arrived. Then another day when I was aked why I didn't reply to her text message?

Digitel's Sun Cellular has lots of explaining to do. The problem of this unreceived text messages is annoying for I always vouch for their being maintained so well by telcos being their cashcow but a problem persisting for several days is unforgiveable

Judy Ann Santos "Juday" Pregnant?

The latest news about Judy Ann Santos' pregnancy hogging the news lately, though a respite from political trash, is not really new

I first heard about juday's pregnancy several days (weeks ago) on Magic 89.9 at Good Time's Radio trio of DJ Mo, Mojo and Grace Lee while driving on EDSA on my way to work.

But what what irks me most was why make a big fuss out of it? Everytime a showbiz personality, it's a big issue at the Buzz. Hello?

Such useless news bannered by showbiz shows and gobbled up by filipinos with not much things to do (or not much brain power to do anything)

stop fooling around, poor pinoys, that's why you're ot getting any improvement in your lives due to preoocupation with trivial pursuits

Pioneer Head Unit (Car Stereo) Prices on Banaue, Quezon City

I canvassed around for the latest prices of Pioneer head units/car stereos for my Vios to replace my stock 2-DIN HU with a 1-DIN HU with spacers so as to get my desired specifications of Auxiliary in, USB and iPod control

here's the average prices of Pioneer head units on Banaue St in Quezon City

DEH-1150 P 3,800
DEH-1250 P 4,000
DEH-2150UB P 4,800
DEH-2250UB P 5,000
DEH-3150UB P 5,800
DEH-3250UB P 6,000

AVH-4150 P27,000
AVH-5150 P30,000

Want to know which car audio shop offers the cheapest prices in banawe? :P
most of them offer free installation, costs of spacers/accessories vary from P400 to P800 for a 1-DIN HU to be installed in a 2-DIN car stereo slot on the dashboard. Some of these units have video/DVD and TV tuners but not recommended for drivers, so i prefer music-only HUs to avoid dangerous distractions.

warning: don't transact with freelance people on Banawe for their dubious offers. Also park your vehicles in safe places to avoid inconveniences (thieves, side-mirror gangs, surplus boys et al)

Garmin Nuvi 1300 Price, Free Maps, Tips and Tricks

At last, I finally got my hands on a shiny new Garmin Nuvi 1300 courtesy of a kababayan who i met online and bought the unit (along with an OBD II code reader) and hand-carried here (even if I've really yet to meet him)

Garmin Nuvi 1300 Review:

Car-mount GPS unit with 4.3 inches display, speaks street names but is kinda slow to respond to touch commands. JPEG viewer.

garmin nuvi 1300comes with dash-mount kit and car charger (no Garmin mapsource CD installer), 1s track log recording (diagnostic logging mode) but I still can't find the data storage folder for the hidden tracklog.

I got it installed with OpenStreetMap (a free GPS map of the Philippines) accurate in Quezon City, Makati where I initially tested it.

Garmin Nuvi Price in Philippines is about P7000.00 but local support/service centers not that many so you should know where to take your Garmin products for repairs.

This would be the initial post about the Garmin Nuvi 1300, watch out for more!

Google Maps API Key Error Problem on OpenStreetMap

Weeks or months ago I encountered an error while accessing Open Street Map Philippines (url: http://www.openstreetmap.com.ph

the error pop up says:

"This web site needs a different Google Maps API key. A new key can be generated at http://code.google.com/apis/maps/."

I tried to access the same website using Firefox, Safari and IE all with same results. I asked freinds to access same but with successful results, they can see the map of the Philippines.

What could be the problem on my side? Is it my laptop running Windows Vista? I don't think it's really Google Maps API key problem but just another "user error."

I'll try to access the map using my other OS (Ubuntu) on my laptop later. If you guys know of any solution to this Google Maps API, just let me know. I'm too busy to try to find the solution myself.

Fujitsu Ten Car Stereo Repair (Head Unit Toyota Vios)

With the final push of car restoration, I needed to replace my Toyota Vios' head unit (car stereo) for i wasn't able to repair it due to power problems so unlike the more expensive digital intrument panel.

I thought i found the problem with a continuity check but after soldering and testing with my AC power adapter, still no power. Note that car head units have two power supplies, one's the main power and the standby power supply voltage regulator connected to the ACC of the vehicle and responsible for the settings and CPU/computer of the car stereo (actually quad since it's four channel) and for powering up the digital LCD display.

If only I can find a fujitsu ten car stereo schematic diagram for download but all I can find online is the toyota vios witing diagram for the car stereo/head unit.

Perhaps I just stop attempting to repair it for wasted time and effort and just head to Banaue (bawawe), Quezon City, Cubao Autocentro, Raon, Quiapo, Manila or even Evagelista St. in Makati for surplus car stereo even brand new ones like Pioneer, JVC, Alpine, Sony head units with auxiliary input, USB and iPod Control preferable 2 DIN for 1 DIN HUs need spacers and additional installation hardware that can cost me around P500 more (even with free installation that comes with the brand new unit price).

Cellphone Jammers to Cheat Elections 2010?

A recent reports by the Commision on Elections (COMELEC) on the threat of the reported entry of 5000 mobile phone signal jamming equipment in the country hoged the news recently.

Cellphone jammers operate like "wild mobile phone" transmitters to block legitimate cellphone signals thereby disbaling them. This is so because the equipment for the May 2010 elections will be using cellular phone lines to transmit precinct count to the tallying center computers.

WOuld the cellphone jammers be able to cheat? I don't think so. They will merely delay the tallying but not the count since the real election count is stored in the individual units at each precinct. Cellphone jamming will only delay but traditional dagdag-bawas cheating tactics won't succeed.

I will look for equipment to trace/track/detect cellphone jammers and procedures how to mitigate the threat.

Raffy London LTO Registration: Hassle-Free, Professional Fixer?

Raffy London's not a scam but his claim of hassle-free LTO car registration is a fluke. Sure, you'll just email or text the required details and he'll do the rest (which is really the work of a fixer).

I have a friend contracted his services and got into a headache and extra expense for late registration caused by RB London's professional fixing activities at LTO Makati.

He earns from the CTPL insurance apparently owning an insurance company and delivers your LTO registration official receipt (OR) via messenger to your home. He charges a little extra too for the car emission test.

The problem is that he does some sort of magic by falsifying the field emmission test (the anti-smoke belching) by not requiring your vehicle to undergo an emissions test (which is a necessary evil to reduce if not eliminate smoke belchers on our dangerous roads).

But during my friend's registration, his one week registration window lapsed without his car being registered and Mr. London, didn't even inform him of the problem. Repeated texts and calls to Mr London just confirmed his car can't be registered due to the required test. He ended up showing up at an accredited field emission test (something every responsible car owner should do) and paid LTO late registration charges that could've been avoided if he was told earlier.

If I were you, I'll just have my car registered at LTO Makati and avoid the fixers. it's not that hard to do it yourself and you'll not encourage the illegal act of fixing transactions.

A large sign warning against illegal fixers can be found at the gate of LTO Makati and yet once you get there, you'll know yyou're near for many people will offer their services to facilitate your transaction that you can actually do yourself. (I'm speaking of LTO Makati but not of other LTO offices so full of fixers)

LTO E-Transact: Online CR, Car Registration Document Transaction

I lost my car's certificate of registration (CR) due to typhoon Ondoy and I badly needed a duplicate CR to replace it. I googled online and saw the LTO requirements for a lost CR replacement including new CR fees:

DUPLICATE CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION

1. Original Official Receipt of Current Payment
2. Photocopy of Certificate of Registration
3. Affidavit of lost Certificate of Registration, indicating CR serial number lost in affidavit
4. Motor Vehicle Inspection Report (Stencil)
5. At least two (2) valid identification cards from Registered owner photocopy to be submitted at LTO after presentation of Original ID’s.
6. TIN of registered owner
7. File application ONLY at LTO where the Certificate of Registration was issued
8. Fees:
1. 30.00 duplicate CR fee
2. 30.00 law enforcement clearance fee
3. 134.40 computer fee
4. 10.00 legal research fund

Note that my car's registered in Makati so I need to drop by again at LTO Makati on Pililla St to get a new CR. But i wanted something online much like online ordering system of NSO to get birth certificates.

the answer I found on https://go.lto.net.ph that offers these online services:

1. Motor Vehicle Certification
2. LETAS Certification
3. LTO Records Verification

Such a nice concept again for the Land Transportation Office (LTO) but only if they can make it work as advertised.

It's because for days now I've been trying to register but the only reply I get is a screenful of JBOSS error messages (givng users the idea of what they're using) Stradcom needs to learn many things on web application security and I won't really be surprised if LTO website gets hacked into.

Heck, the SSL certificate also doesn't match the domain name that's why you'll also encounter a cerficate error when you first visit the website.

LTO and Stradcom, wake up!

Pioneer KP-500 Car Stereo for that Vintage 80's Look

I've decided to assemble again some sort of a DIY audio setup at home centered on the classic Pioneer KP-500 car stereo, the 80's iconic car stereo with a rotary dial for the radio tuner.

I still remember it uses an 8-track cassette player and a AN214 integrated circuit power amplifier with bass and treble controls with a silver front panel.

I looked online for such a dinosaur car stereo but the results were not so encouraging due to the price. I intend to visit Quiapo's Raon one of these days to look around and hope to score one. I would like the car stereo to be my centerpiece along with two Pioneer PT-6 tweeters (i used to have one of these but now probably rusty at in Paete, Laguna).

My ultimate plan is to modify the circuit to add an iPod input instead of the tape player. Who know's I can even add it to my car stereo :P

Toyota Vios Digital Odometer Repair/Tweaking

Last month I've posted something about my damaged Toyota Vios 1.5G instrument panel containing my speedometer, tachometer (for RPM), fuel gauge and automatic transmission shift indicator (P/R/N/D/2/L) but now look at the picture.

How i did it? I bought an el cheapo digital multimeter at CDR King for P120.00 and used my dormant electronic repair skills that i've not used for many years. I'm na Electronics Engineer and been repairing stuff since grade 5 (when kids my age are just playing). It's a good thing there's also Google to show me IC parts functions and datasheets that enabled to to trace the problem with the voltage regulator. I used an old AC adapter to test/power up the unit prior to installation in my car. There's also the main CPU ship storing the odometer reading but no online information available. If i can get my hands on one I may be able to do Odometer rollback/tweaking but something i won't offer to anyone as that's cheating.

Note that this digital salvaging of a flooded/water damaged digital instrument panel saved me P30k for a new one from Toyota casa (price already with 20% discount). I almost ordered also a JDM (japan domestic market) replacement part from a friend's surplus shop (Jay and Jer) from a Toyota Funcargo, Yaris, Altis or Echo. (note the Toyota Innova also has a digital odometer but the gauges are "old school" analog types). I've seen digital ones also for Honda Civic but more elaborate.
